The Extranalities project started in 2015 as a collaboration between Timothy Information Limited and Herman Hermsen for an exhibition at Gallery Reverso in Lisbon. For each subsequent iteration of the Project, a new jeweller from a different country has been invited to join this expanding jewellery group.
Every new Extranalities event starts with a blind lottery-based exchange of unfamiliar materials, objects, etc. for each maker to respond to. The focus being to challenge each jeweller to leave the familiarity of their usual designing and making comfort zones.
The current edition of this project is called Mechanorganic. This time the task was to create „mechanical” jewellery from „organic” objects and „organic” jewellery from „mechanical” objects. As a result of this creative experiment, a number of surprising objects were created using objects of various uses and origins, including an animal skull found in the forest, a music box, a screw, but also natural stones, wood, metals, beads, thread or paint.
The exhibition presents works by the initiators of Extranalities: Herman Hermsen from the Netherlands, known for the radical minimalism of his jewellery works and a lecturer at the University of Applied Arts in Düsseldorf, and the British artist known as Timothy Information Limited (Tim Carson), whose jewellery objects explore the shifting narratives, the badge as a political medium and the role of the author in the creative process, as well as objects by the artists who joined them in the following years: Peter Vermandere (Belgium), Felieke van der Leest (Netherlands), Sofia Björkman (Sweden), Denise Reytan (Germany) and Sara Gackowska (Poland).
