NEW CONSTELLATIONS
30 years STUDIO S + M + L_XL - METAL AND JEWELRY
STUDIO S + M + L_XL - METAL AND JEWELLERY was established at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava (Slovakia) in 1991 under the direction of Anton Cepka. Since 1995 the studio has been led by the artist, goldsmith, architect and jeweller Karol Weisslechner. The studio is supported by assistants Kristýna Španihelova and Matúš Cepek. An integral part of the studio are lectures, workshops and seminars by visiting professors. The studio aims to foster the collective spirit of the students and build mutual communication. During regular discussions, students learn to communicate, illustrate and justify their own observations and visions, but also to respond to the visions of others. The studio gives students a great deal of freedom to achieve individual goals and expects them to be personally motivated, open-minded, experimental and willing to abandon familiar attitudes. The studio emphasises not only craftsmanship but also hand techniques, seen as cultural heritage. The studio is supported by information from the visual arts, architecture, film, fashion and design.
The NEW CONSTELLATIONS exhibition is a documentation of works by students and professors of STUDIO S + M + L_XL – METAL AND JEWELLERY. The constelation roughly translates as "meeting of the stars". Followers of astrology believe that the constellations have a significant influence on people, their relationships and events, while the Greek poet Homer used the term "cosmos" to refer to a gem. The exhibition provides an insight into the brain's creative processes during creation. It focuses on the perception of the human body on different levels, as well as the interplay between bodies and between the body and the jewel. Jewellery is seen as an autonomous artistic medium that develops parallelly to other spheres of art and is influenced by them, while also affecting them. The aim of the exhibition is to visualise the specificity of the studies, which include pragmatic tasks – based on concepts, experimental works as well as emotional and intuitive ones.
