Exhibition of the Experimental Design Studio, Faculty of Design, Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk
There are technologies we still call “modern,” even though they have long been part of everyday design practice.
The exhibition “State of Now” no longer tells a story about a futuristic vision of tomorrow, but about design in the present moment—here and now—in a world where digital tools have become the natural “workshop” of the designer.
The Experimental Design Studio, situated within the structure of the Faculty of Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, is a place where the boundaries of technological possibilities are explored and tested.
The exhibition presents jewellery, products, and objects created by the youngest generation of designers, for whom digital tools (CAD/CAM), additive technologies (3D printing), subtractive technologies (CNC), as well as virtual and augmented reality (AR and VR), are now the primary choice. These tools are used both for operational and implementation purposes, and—just as often—in the realm of experimental, authorial, and unique design.
Our aim is not to leave the viewer with the question, “How was this made?”, but also to offer suggestions that help them find the answer. That is why, alongside the finished objects, we partially reveal the design process—from the first digital file, through generative and parametric models, simulations, animations, and video materials, all the way to the final physical object.
