“Narrative lies at the heart of my practice: without a story, I do not create.”
Unspoken underlies conversations and We all carry untold. Truth, and emotions, subjects we withhold out of modesty or fear. Sometimes we keep silence simply because language proves insufficient. Bélanger gathers these silences, transforming them into tactile forms that mirror the whispers of underlying convictions, and eloquent silences. Through her work, the invisible becomes perceptible, she illuminates what we so often choose to keep hidden.
Jewellery becomes a site of reflection, a space for acceptance and sharing deeply meaningful, often vulnerable communication. Here, every gesture, every word, and every silence acquires emotional weight. The artist navigates these intimate terrains with attentiveness and without judgement through form, material, and gesture. Wool lies at the core of her practice. Beyond its aesthetic qualities, it brings a sensory and symbolic dimension that balances the sensitive subjects explored in her work. It provides a warm and reassuring balance, a reassuring presence that gently mediates the difficult or intimate themes she addresses. This soft body is then adorned by precious metals, pearls, and glass beads, adding tension between layers of material resonance of rhythms and sensory depth.
I hope viewers are moved by this encounter with intimacy by these universal unspoken thoughts that connect us all, even when a language barrier remains, since the words are written in my mother tongue, French. The artist shares.
For Sophie Bélanger, jewellery is a form of non-verbal language. Her pieces carry meaning, intention, and emotional charge. When jewellery transcends ornament, it begins to speak—of who we are, what we believe, and where our vulnerabilities lie. This language may not be universal, but it is profoundly and unmistakably human.
Sophie Bélanger, artist name SOFI, is known for her colorful and playful jewelry. Born in Quebec City, Canada, in 1979, she completed her DEC in arts and crafts in 2001. She worked in a number of jewelry stores, and also had her own workshop for several years. She also practised painting and drawing, which led her to integrate these mediums into her work. In 2016, her career took a turn when she joined the filière 11 collective, where she discovered contemporary jewelry. Inspired initially by street art and political art, she eventually developed her own style. She was greatly inspired by the reality of being a caregiver for her son, who suffers from a rare degenerative disease. With her jewelry, she hopes to make people think and touch on the notion of happiness, hardship and grief. Since then, she has had several group exhibitions, both nationally and internationally.
