We suffer from otherness and because of otherness. Sometimes it arouses negative feelings and destructive forces that want to storm in and establish the ‘right order’ at all costs. The figure of a stranger perfectly channels our fears and anxieties. It is easier to turn against someone different than against ourselves, which would involve confronting our own experience of imperfection or deficiency. Or perhaps it is our own deeply felt otherness, repressed and drowned out as we try so hard to fit in. The fluidity of roles means that we are on both sides: we are formatted, we format others and ourselves, and at the same time we hold an irredicable need for our own authenticity as well as the energy of others, those outside our own range of perception. And what if a homogeneous world turned out to be hell? What if all the beauty of the world lies in difference?

The objects in Ewa Effenberg-Kai's collection defy all attempts to normalise them, to frame them within safe, familiar patterns. The artist enters the realm of otherness, treating it as a boundless space of richness and inspiration. She reaches for material that has otherness written into its DNA – fragments of cosmic matter. She uses fragments of meteorites that have fallen to Earth. She uses them as quotations, turns them in her fingers, makes them partners in a dialogue.
