Karol Weisslechner

Conjunction

Karol Weisslechner born in 1957 in Bratislava. Studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, at the atelier of Vojtech Vilhan (1980-88). He entered the art scene in the second half of the 1980s together with the group of artists and architects establishing the first wave of postmodern art in Slovakia.

The artist deals with the creation of jewellery, objects, installations as well as interior design, design and stage design. His works can be found in state and private collections both in Slovakia and abroad. Currently, he lectures as a professor and runs the Studio of Metal and Jewellery at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava.

One of the remarkable characteristics of Weisslechner’s work is the way how he treats found objects. Weisslechner’s preoccupation with both the form and content of these objects has to do not only with metaphorical thinking, but also with interpretative invention together with the sense of humor and irony. This is closely related to his tendency towards symbolic imagery, epic understanding including historical and archetypal themes.

Works presented at the exhibition Conjunctionare small sculptures inspired by architecture, cosmic bodies and different aspects of the contemporary visual culture. To create them artist uses different minerals, little branches, fragments of textiles and lace, women’s hair etc.), which offer him a rich source of inspiration, provoking imagination and triggering chains of associations. As a result we can see unexpected combinations of materials and shapes. Conjunction is a creative freedom and joy of creation, unpredictable in its essence, it is at the same time courageous and revealing.
