GEORD DOBLER DIVERSITY
A retrospective exhibition of one of the greatest contemporary jewellery designers. The artist has made sure that the exhibition includes works representative of each stage of his work.
Georg Dobler was born in 1952 in Creussen, Germany. He began his training as a goldsmith at the Berufsfachschule für Goldschmiedekunst and later co-founded a studio for contemporary jewellery with the goldsmith Winfried Krüger. Dobler earned his master certificate in goldsmithing from Pforzheim and came to international prominence in the early '80s creating what were to become his iconic geometric and deconstructivist forms. In the mid 1980s he started complementing his jewellery with organic elements in blackened silver. His works from that period are characterized by naturalistic elements, casting structures, forms from nature and – above all – large, facetted stones. In the late 1990s, he experimented with the opulence of gemstones, creating pieces characterized by an innovative combination of naturalism and artificiality. Around the turn of the millennium, he introduced minimalist compositions featuring polished amethyst or quartz slices set in blackened silver frames. His BeetleBrooches created since 2005 under the title Á la Lalique clearly reveal he was inspired by this great Art Nouveau master. Recently, the author counting among the most important contemporary jewellery artists of today, started designing abstract, geometrical and technology-inspired pieces again.
Since 2002, Dobler has been a Professor at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hildesheim, Germany and has had his work exhibited internationally. His work can be found in major museum collections including Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Museum of Arts and Design, The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, The Israel Museum of Art, Jerusalem, Victoria & Albert Museum, London and others, too numerous to mention.
