Jacek Byczewski can be a more positive case study in modern Polish jewellery – first of all as a designer who has mastered the skill in the collision-free integration of the authentic artistic ambition of the author with the ability to discount it on the market, with no necessary compromise between the both. On the Polish scene of unique jewellery Byczewski is a recognizable brand name, the more valuable, the more stylists appear on it, taking a short cut to achieve something which in the good old days (when not everything was produced in China) was achieved by hard, systematic, long-lasting work. His jewellery undoubtedly does not belong in any modern terms, referring to the casual fashion – it is neither “fashionable”, “trendy” nor “vintage”. The material culture and aesthetics that Jacek Byczewski consequently develops may be explicitly categorized as STYLE – an idea which is much more immune to the lapse of time and even if today it is not customary or reasonable any more to keep jewellery in a casket or pass it from generation to generation, the objects signed with Byczewski’s name are in no respect a short-term investment.

Byczewski seems to bite off more than he can chew. Is it possible to create anything more based on a ring? Ona one stone ring? A pepper pot?
Whereas for him any limitations are a challenge. It is strange – the more popular, awarded and experienced he gets, the more immune he remains to flights of frivolous imagination. He is modest. He does not provoke. He refers to his own carving education and awareness of human body. It is an important “load”, a constant feature of his search. Byczewski senses the proportions of human figure and composes decorations accordingly.
