21 Gramm

“21 Gramrefers to the 1901 hypothesis by Dr. Duncan MacDougall, who claimed that 21 gram is the weight of a human soul. The idea has inspired filmmakers, songwriters, fine artists, novelists, and documentary makers, but not a single jewellery maker.  At least not until Ruudt Peters undertook to challenge jewellery makers to create a new work of art, which would translate the idea of the soul in a physical object that weighs no more than 21 gram. The exhibition presents pieces by 120 international jewellery designers, half of whom come from China. Contrasts and syntheses in the exhibition embody encounters between Eastern and Western notions and design interpretations of the human soul.

The exhibition is curated by Ruudt Peters in collaboration with the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou, China. The show is accompanied by a catalogue.

“21 gram” is sponsored by the China Academy of Art in Hangzou and shown there in autumn 2018. At the beginning of 2019 this exhibition came to Europe, with Galerie Handwerk in Munich (DE) as its first venue and RING Gallery in Legnica – the second. In Munich it was shown during the International Crafts and Trades Fair and the special jewellery show “Schmuck 2019”. In Poland it is a highlight of Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER 2019. In June “21 Gram” will travel to the BeCraft Gallery in Mons (BE) to end its European journey in Ruudt Peters’ homeland – the Netherlands, at the CODA Museum in Appledorn.
