Salute to Pinton

Mario Pinton (1919-2008)

In the summer of 1989, together with my wife Miek, I pay a visit to the workshop of Mario Pinton, the Nestor of the Paduan designers. Our visit almost has a sacral character. We make the acquaintance of a particularly kind and generous artist, in whom the person and his art live in a perfect symbiosis. There is no trace of conflict here, in sharp contrast to tumultuous Padua.

In the summer of 1989, together with Miek, I pay a visit to the workshop of Mario Pinton, the Nestor of the Paduan designers. Our visit almost has a sacral character. We make the acquaintance of a particularly kind and generous artist, in whom the person and his art live in a perfect symbiosis. There is no trace of conflict here, in sharp contrast to tumultuous Padua. Pinton shows us his personal collection. His jewels are breathtakingly beautiful. The ‘Collana Anatomica con pendente’, a dying deer, a light necklace of hammered gold that fits in the palm of your hand and that seems to be stolen from an Etruscan tomb.

A brooch incorporates sparkles of 24- and 18-carat gold in a plaiting of geometrical lines, stressed by a minuscule ruby beneath. We also see satinized golden rings with simple motifs in the form of a spiral that take you back two thousand years; others have a more cubist slant.

In all their simplicity, Pinton’s creations fit close to the antique pagan Roman sensibility, the purest definition of the jewel, the love for gold, the lightness, the colours; and inside, his noble willfulness and the respect for the person who will wear it.

A cooperation is born, exhibitions are organised in Villa De Bondt. Pinton creates a necklace for my mother’s sixtieth birthday. I commission him to make an engagement ring for Miek: he creates a magnificent golden jewel with her sign of the zodiac, the Ram. He writes letters, he calls us, he never lets us down.

New Year’s Day 01.01.01: our fourth child is born and we call her Millennium Jeanne. Beyond all expectation Mario Pinton sends his birthday present, a bronze sculpture. He has understood the message of this happiness. This is Mario Pinton all over: he stands on a higher level ... and creates, specially for Jeanne, a little masterpiece: ‘Angelo con Trombone’.

“Salute to Pinton” is an exhibition intended as an ultimate thank-you for his unrestrained unique generosity and the trust he has put in us. By means of their creations, twenty-one artists give a simple salute to their great master Professor Mario Pinton.

Professor Mario Pinton (1919 - 2008) – the great artist, jeweller and Nestor of the Paduan jewellery school. For Pinton, jewellery was a form of sculpture in a small scale. An understanding of geometry was fundamental to his designs. The jewellery of ancient and non-European cultures were inspiring him. He was director and professor jewellery at the Instituto Pietro Salvatico in Padua (Italy).
